 January newsletter 2024

Welcome to 2024, a leap year! So, Ladies, start practising your bent knee skills and uphold the leap-year tradition of proposing to your loved one on February 29th. Gentlemen, it's time to start planning your reaction if a 24/7 status is off the agenda!

There are no new openings for January, but Deli Polonia is relocating from High Street to The Broadway, and Ealing Rug Gallery has relocated to Bond Street and rebranded as Macey's Rugs to accommodate exciting new changes in design and styles.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the Sandringham Mews development could start around May as the last few tenants relocate.

Sandringham Mews Ealing will deliver a wider pavement, modern purpose-built retail units to replace the existing footprint, and 318 co-living residential apartments above to attract young people to live, work, or commute from Ealing. Read details of the proposal here.

Retail Insights

The November report (December pending) from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) talks about a slight uplift in sales for November but draws attention, as illustrated in the graph, to the fact retail sales are declining.

Reuters reported UK retailers had a weak December, and the British Retail Consortium (BCR) confirmed footfall was down throughout December, negating hopes of a golden quarter.

Sophie Michael, head of retail and wholesale at BDO LLP, stated that these results were the worst since records began, with negative in-store sales in the three consecutive months up to Christmas. "The seriousness of these results should not be underestimated," she warned.

You can download the full report from their website here or read on our website here.

Waste Transfer Notices (WTN)

The council are checking Waste Transfer Notices (WTN). So businesses need to be aware that,

  • Ealing Council insists every business has a General Waste-WTN. A recycling-WTN is insufficient, and will result in a £400 fine.
  • Businesses are prohibited from using residential waste collection services, including putting black bags out on residential collection days or using residential recycling sacks.
  • No matter how big or small, every business is expected to pay for removing their business waste, and a waste transfer notice is the physical proof you pay a waste contractor.
  • Businesses caught using residential services will be fined £400 for every bag or item they leave out.

Businesses on the MIE recycling scheme received hand-delivered information to confirm what is required; it is also on our website here, but if you have any doubts, please email support@makeitealing.co.uk or call the office on 0208 567 7854

'A' Boards

If you have an 'A' board outside your business, prepare for a new 'A' Board charge in 2024.

The Council website suggests the 'A' board fees will be £150 + an admin fee of £62, but a timeline, e.g. quarterly or yearly, has yet to be decided.
