London College of Music Presents FIRST LADY SUITE

First Lady Suite is a poignant chamber musical by Michael John LaChiusa that crafts a witty and imaginative portrait of four First Ladies caught between history and their own private turmoils. Through a series of surrealist vignettes, the musical blurs the line between public duty and personal desire, using absurdity and humour to explore the profound costs of power and the quiet rebellions that define a woman’s role in the White House in the 20th century.
The show opens with a Prologue, in which a nameless African American First Lady reflects on her place in history and the legacy of women whose stories have often been overlooked.
A first story, Over Texas, is set aboard Air Force One on 22 November 1963, Jacqueline Kennedy, her secretary Mary Gallagher and President Kennedy’s secretary Evelyn Lincoln travel to Dallas on the day of President Kennedy’s assassination. As the journey unfolds, Mary’s unsettling dreams and premonitions foreshadow the tragic events that are about to occur.
A second vignette, Where’s Mamie?, is a time-travel fantasy set in the Eisenhower White House bedroom. On her birthday, a lonely Mamie Eisenhower is visited by the opera star Marian Anderson, who takes her on a fantastical journey that touches on rumours of presidential infidelity as well as the racial tensions of 1950s America.
In a third piece, Olio, humour takes centre stage as Margaret Truman attempts to perform a vocal recital while competing for attention with her formidable mother, Bess Truman. The result is a lively exploration of family dynamics, ambition and life in the public eye.
The final and most emotionally resonant segment, Eleanor Sleeps Here, examines the relationship between Eleanor Roosevelt and journalist Lorena Hickok. Framed by a flight over Washington with aviator Amelia Earhart, the story explores themes of loneliness, affection, missed opportunities and the restrictions faced by women in positions of influence.
