Counter Terrorism Awareness

Counter Terrorism would like to remind businesses that the current threat level is substantial—an attack is likely. They are offering awareness training either on-site or via Microsoft Teams. A 60 to 90-minute presentation will enable you to identify suspicious behaviour and items. A more in-depth course lasts 3 hours and is suitable for larger venues and entertainment areas.

‘ACT’ (Action Counters Terrorism) Awareness – A 60-90-minute presentation that discusses the current terrorism threat, an introduction on how to identify suspicious behaviour, how to identify suspicious items, what to do in order to stay safe in the event of an attack, and how and when to report any concerns to the Police. It can be delivered on site in person or remotely on Microsoft Teams. For example, we regularly provide presentations open to all employees to attend either online or in person at companies who would like staff to have a better general awareness of terrorism. The presentation is delivered by a Police Officer who will be able to answer any questions or concerns that you or your colleagues may have.

SCaN (See, Check and Notify) is a more in-depth interactive course lasting about 3 hours that specifically deals with identifying suspicious behaviour and what to do to counter hostile reconnaissance, thereby deterring individuals from targeting venues or people. SCaN is very new and has been developed by the City of London Police and universities in London in the past 1-2 years following several years of research. Although the focus is on terrorism, the course has been successful in deterring all forms of criminality at sites where it has been delivered, at the same time improving general customer service and providing security staff with an increased confidence and awareness of the impact they can have. The courses are currently proving especially popular and effective with security personnel across London in many high-profile and iconic locations where it has been tested, and has resulted in good intelligence being passed-onto Police that may have been missed previously. This course is most useful to any managers, customer-facing staff, maintenance/cleaning staff or security teams and due to the workshop nature of the course, is best delivered in person – to as many or few staff as you want. There is a short presentation of SCaN that can be delivered directly to you either online or in person by way of an introduction.

Both ACT and SCaN products are supported by and feature up-to-date information from NaCTSO (National Counter Terrorism Security Office) and the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA). The Met Police also have a free app available on Android and iOS called ‘PSO London Shield’ that offers free counter-terrorism advice and guidance should you want to download that. Further advice and guidance can also be found on the ProtectUK website. Launched in 2022, ProtectUK is a new central hub for counter terrorism and security advice. Whether you’re a business owner, work in security, or are a member of the public, register with ProtectUK to become part of the community and receive the latest news and online courses that will enable you to be better protected.

If you are unable to attend or commit to  a session delivered by a police officer, we recommend completing the below as a minimum.
